About This Bahia Palace & Saadian Tombs Tour

This is a detailed tour of the royal south of the medina, for travelers who want to understand Marrakech’s monuments, not just photograph them. In three hours we visit just these places, slowly and in depth.

We begin at Bahia Palace, built in the late 19th century for Ba Ahmed, the grand vizier of the sultan. Its name means “the brilliant one”, and you’ll see why in its painted cedar ceilings, zellige mosaics, carved stucco and quiet garden courtyards. I explain how a vizier’s palace was organised, from the reception halls to the rooms of his wives.

Next door lies the Mellah, Marrakech’s Jewish quarter, created in 1557 under the Saadian dynasty. We walk its streets and talk about the Jewish community that lived here for centuries and their place in Marrakech’s history.

We finish at the Saadian Tombs, the royal necropolis of Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur, built in the late 1500s with Italian Carrara marble in the Hall of the Twelve Columns. Sealed off around 1672 by the Alaouite sultan Moulay Ismail, the tombs were forgotten for over two centuries until they were rediscovered in 1917.
